In order to provide a better insight into the work being undertaken by the planning group on behalf of the village, with the objective to introduce some degree of order for future housing development within the village, a timeline of events has been drawn up and a copy of this is attached here. Planning Timeline.

Parkham Development - Referendum

The result of the Village Referendum is as follows, whilst it is not legally binding it is an indication of how the village feels with regard to the developments proposed and those being currently built.

In the future it is proposed that a Parish Referendum will take place depending on the results of our campaign.

Current Situation

  • Substantial (78) level of housebuilding has been approved, further major builds in pipeline. Represents 25% expansion.

  • Considerable discontent across the community to the recent level of building.

  • Public Meeting of Parishioners held to voice concerns (some 80 attendees).

  • Lack of infrastructure, Parish Council would like to “freeze “development to monitor impact of houses in pipeline.

  • If the current rate of development continues it will change Parkham forever.

The Problem

  • Development is piecemeal, there is no overall plan for development

  • There is no attempt to build houses that are really affordable housing (Current builds are £350k upwards).

  • The affordable housing scheme is being exploited for profit.

  • Adverse impact upon Farming

Fact

  • Torridge do not have a 5 year Land supply plan and no clear strategy for building applications.

  • There appears to be no outlook of this situation being resolved in the near future.

  • Developers not being held to account once permission approved.

Action

Torridge need to be driven to implementing a land supply strategy with the utmost urgency. 

In our opinion this will not take place without external intervention.

The community must have a greater input in the decision process.
